...APGA and Labour Party Take Early Lead as Second Stage Voting Begins

UCHENNA OKOROCHA Reporting Live from

Awka, Anambra State.

The build-up to the 2025 Anambra State Governorship election gained momentum yesterday as the BTV Television Network officially released the results of the first stage of its public opinion polls.

The announcement, made on Thursday, September 19th, 2025, has already sparked heated discussions among political watchers, party faithful, and the general public.

The polls, which ran from September 1st to September 19th, were designed to gauge voter sentiment and test the strength of the leading political parties ahead of the main governorship election.

According to BTV’s polling team, thousands of Anambra residents participated actively, casting their votes through the network’s opinion platforms.

THE RESULTS:

The first stage results, released ahead of the second and final stage of polling, show the following breakdown:

ALL PROGRESSIVES GRAND ALLIANCE (APGA): 3,434 votes

LABOUR PARTY (LP): 2,988 votes

PEOPLES DEMOCRATIC PARTY (PDP): 608 votes

ALL PROGRESSIVES CONGRESS (APC): 232 votes

AFRICAN DEMOCRATIC CONGRESS (ADC): 205 votes

From the outcome, it is clear that the contest is shaping into a two-horse race between APGA and the Labour Party, with both parties commanding overwhelming support when compared to their rivals.

BTV has confirmed that the second stage of voting will commence at 12 midnight, September 19th, and run until October 30th, 2025, at 12 noon.

The climax of the exercise will be a live candidates’ debate on October 30th, featuring only the top three political parties based on the opinion poll standings.

Organizers believe that the debate will provide an avenue for candidates to directly engage the electorate, defend their manifestos, and attempt to sway undecided voters.

The debate will also serve as the final opportunity for the public to cast their votes in the opinion polls before BTV makes its concluding announcement.

BTV Television Network has a history of conducting opinion polls on major elections in Nigeria.

Established in 2010 in Abuja, the network first gained recognition during the presidential polls of that year when it conducted a nationwide survey that correctly predicted the victory of then-President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.

Since then, the organization has expanded its scope, running similar exercises in state and national elections, earning both praise and criticism for its efforts to democratize public opinion.

The first stage results provide early insights into the dynamics of Anambra’s governorship race. APGA’s lead underscores the party’s entrenched grassroots structures and historical influence in the state.

However, the Labour Party’s strong showing reflects a growing momentum, particularly among younger voters energized by recent political movements.

The PDP, once dominant in Anambra politics, finds itself in a distant third place, while the APC and ADC remain fringe contenders with minimal support.

Analysts suggest that the second stage of voting and the candidates’ debate will be critical in shaping final voter opinions.

The ability of APGA and LP candidates to consolidate support, while also reaching undecided voters, may ultimately determine the direction of the race.

The announcement has already triggered debates across social media, town halls, and marketplaces in Anambra.

Many residents see the polls as a reflection of the people’s voice, while others question the accuracy and representativeness of such surveys.

BTV, however, maintains that its methodology is transparent and that the exercise serves as an avenue for civic engagement rather than a definitive forecast of election outcomes.

As the countdown to the grand finale of the BTV opinion polls begins, Anambra residents and the Nigerian political class at large will be watching closely.

The coming weeks promise intense campaigning, strategic alliances, and heightened political activity, all culminating in what could be one of the most closely contested governorship polls in the state’s history.
